What is a Meniscus Tear?

The meniscus is a C-shaped cartilage cushion between your thigh bone (femur) and shin bone (tibia). It acts as a shock absorber and stabilizer for your knee. A meniscus tear occurs when this cartilage is torn due to injury, sudden twisting, or degeneration with age. The tear can cause pain, swelling, stiffness, or a “locking” sensation in your knee joint.

A meniscus tear occurs when this cartilage is torn due to injury, sudden twisting, or degeneration with age. The tear can cause pain, swelling, stiffness, or a “locking” sensation in your knee joint.

causes
  1. Traumatic causes (younger adults):
  • Sudden twisting or pivoting of the knee during sports
  • Direct impact injury to the knee
  1. Degenerative causes (middle-aged & older adults):
  • Natural wear and tear of cartilage
  • Arthritis-related degeneration

Weak thigh muscles and reduced joint stability

You may have a meniscus injury if you experience:

  • Sharp knee pain during movement or twisting
  • Swelling and stiffness around the joint
  • Clicking or popping sound in the knee
  • Feeling that your knee is “locking” or “giving way”
  • Difficulty bending or straightening the leg fully

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can a meniscus tear heal on its own?

Small tears near the outer edge sometimes heal naturally, but most moderate to large tears require medical or surgical intervention.

Is arthroscopic surgery painful?

It’s done under anesthesia, so you won’t feel pain during surgery. Post-surgery pain is mild and manageable with medications.

How long does the surgery take?

Usually 45–60 minutes, depending on the type and extent of the tear.

Will I need physiotherapy after surgery?

Yes. Rehabilitation is essential to restore knee strength and prevent stiffness.

Can a meniscus tear come back after treatment?

If proper care, exercises, and precautions are followed, recurrence is rare.
